Spotif-reaking awesome!!

So, I was talking to my friend Brooke over the weekend.  As usual, we started talking about music.

Now, this girl is a music junkie.  I mean, I consider myself to be a music junkie, but Brooke makes me look like a Top 40-loving novice.  She goes to a bunch of concerts every year and has XM radio and is one of the people I go to when I want to know what’s new.

She mentions Spotify in passing like it’s something I’ve heard of before.  Well, I’ve never heard of this Spotify.  Maybe some of you haven’t either.  I’m about to enlighten you like Brooke enlightened me 2 days ago.  This might change your life.  You’ve been warned.

Spotify is a web application that allows you to listen to music.  Have you heard of and used Pandora?  Are you alive in this year of our Lord 2013 and under the age of 65?

Here’s why Spotify is better than Pandora:

1.  You can search for specific songs, artists or albums.  When you open Pandora and start playing one of your stations or one of their station presets, the most you can do is replay a song that just played or skip the one you’re on.  On Spotify, you can play whatever you want.  Even brand new stuff.

2.  Spotify allows you to create playlists.  Just like iTunes and other music management programs, you can pick individual songs and put them into whatever playlists you want.

3.  The premium features are better.  If you buy Pandora’s premium Pandora One, you get no ads, a desktop app (You get this with the free version of Spotify.), better audio quality and custom skins (Psht!).  When you upgrade your Spotify to Unlimited, you get all of those things, too.  BUT, if you upgrade to Spotify Premium, you get to use it on your phone AND have access to the music that you choose offline.

Yeah, there’s a price difference (Spotify Premium costs $9.99/month.) but $10 a month is worth my sanity, honestly.  And I spend that much in the iTunes store each month anyway.

Basically, what I’m saying is, right now I’m listening to the AWOLNATION album that I’ve been looking at for months.  Earlier, I listened to the Macklemore album that I wanted.  If I would have purchased those 2 albums (and I would have), I would have spent $19.98.  In my opinion, it’s already been worth the money this month.

To me, it’s worth it.  If you listen to music for more than an hour a day it’s worth it.  If you don’t listen to music for more than an hour a day for any number of reasons (because you feel like your library is stale, you don’t want to lug your laptop into the other room to listen to music, you don’t have a laptop and therefore can only listen to music in one room on one device, etc) it’s worth it.

Checking it out is free and I suggest you do that.  You even get 48 hours of Spotify Premium for free so you can see what your phone app looks like and play around with it before you commit.

If you try it, let me know.  If you use it and love it/hate it, tell me that, too.
